Mediation gives people a chance to sit down and settle their conflicts.

Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution whereby a neutral party, called a mediator, assists parties in solving problems. Mediation is voluntary and allows the parties to communicate through the mediator to come up with a compromise to the dispute. Mediation can be used in a variety of situations, such as property disputes, divorce settlements, employment situations, and child custody disputes. The City of Dayton, Ohio, has a mediation resource called the Dayton Mediation Center that allows interested persons to become volunteer mediators.

      Obtain a volunteer application from the Dayton Mediation Center. You can download the application from the Dayton Mediation Center website. A volunteer application is also available at domediation.com.

      Fill out the volunteer application. The volunteer application requires you to submit your personal information, your contact information, why you are interested in mediation, any special skills that you have, education information and when you will be available for mediation. Submit the application to the Dayton Mediation Center when complete.

      Complete the mediator apprenticeship program. The program is a multi-faceted program that is comprised of 35 hours of class preparation and 15 hours of mediation. Upon completion of the program, you will qualify as a mediator.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Dayton Mediation Center requires volunteers to mediate one Saturday a month for three hours for a period of two years.
