How to Stop Receiving Junk Email

How to Stop Receiving Junk Email thumbnail
Prevent junk email by removing your email address from public websites.

Junk email is annoying, but there are ways to banish it from your email account. Unsolicited commercial email, also know as spam, typically happens when an email spammer buys a list of email addresses from a list broker, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Your email address could end up on such as list if it is on a news group posting, website, chat room or other places online. Before you know it, your email address is part of a spam list and your email account is filled with junk email.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your email address from public postings, such as chat rooms, website and membership directories.

    • 2

Create two email addresses, the FTC suggests; one for personal email messages and one for websites and chat groups.

    • 3

Select an opt-out option, if possible, if a website allows it as outlined in its privacy policy.

    • 4

Use an email spam filter, if your email account or Internet provider provides one.

    • 5

Send a copy of unwanted or deceptive email to the FTC at spam@uce.gov. The FTC says it uses the unsolicited emails to take law enforcement action against people who send deceptive email.
