How to Install a Fuel Pump Relay on a 2002 Audi A4

The fuel pump relay on a 2002 Audi A4 is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM energizes the fuel pump relay in order to send power to the fuel pump. When this relay fails, the fuel pump stops operating; the relay must thus be replaced in order to restore the fuel system to proper operating condition. Replacement relays can be purchased from auto parts stores and licensed Audi dealerships.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the vehicle's transmission in "Park" and turn on the interior lighting. Apply the emergency brake.

    • 2

Look underneath the dashboard and find the fuel pump relay--it’s located next to the steering column, above the pedals.

    • 3

Unplug the fuel pump relay from its connector and discard it. Install the replacement relay.

    • 4

Turn the key to the “On” position and listen as the fuel pump energizes for a 2 to 3 second period. If the fuel pump energizes, then the relay is functioning properly.
