How to Brighten the Screen of an HP Pavilion

If the screen on your HP Pavilion laptop is not meeting your standards when it comes to brightness, Hewlett-Packard gives you a few ways to make the screen brighter. You can use the "Fn" keys on your keyboard, plug your laptop into AC power, or adjust the settings for your video card to adjust the brightness.

Instructions

  1. AC Power

    • 1

      Turn your laptop off.

    • 2

Plug the power cord into the side of your HP Pavilion laptop in the back-right corner. Double-check your power cord to make sure all connections are secure, and that the power cord is securely plugged into the wall.

    • 3

Press "Power" on your HP Pavilion laptop to turn it back on. Your screen will be much brighter than it was without the AC power connected.

    Control Panel

    • 4

Click the "Start" button on your Windows toolbar and then click "Control Panel."

    • 5

Click "Personalization." At the "Personalize appearance and sounds" screen, click "Display Settings."

    • 6

Click "Advanced Settings" in the lower-right corner of the Display Settings dialog box.

    • 7

Select the "ATI Catalyst Control Center" tab. Click the button that says "ATI Catalyst Control Center." When the ATI Catalyst Control Center asks you if you want to view the basic or advanced settings, choose advanced.

    • 8

Click "Color." In the Color menu, slide the Brightness bar to the right to make your screen brighter, and to the left to make your screen darker. When you find a setting you like, click "Apply."

    Function Keys

    • 9

Locate the "Fn" key on your HP Pavilion laptop. The "Fn" key is located on the lower-left corner of your keyboard, just to the right of the "Ctrl" key.

    • 10

Press and hold the "Fn" key. While you are holding the "Fn" key, press the "F8" key to make your screen brighter. Press the key just once to make the screen on your HP Pavilion laptop slightly brighter. Press "F8" key multiple times or hold it down to make your screen considerably brighter.

    • 11

Press and hold the "Fn" key. While you are holding the "Fn" key, press the "F7" key to make your screen darker. Press the key just once to make the screen on your HP Pavilion laptop slightly darker. Press the "F7" key multiple times or hold it down to make your screen considerably darker.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless you are plugged into AC power, a brighter laptop screen means you will drain the battery life of your HP Pavilion laptop quicker than normal.
