Reboot your Windows 2000 server using shutdown.exe.

Windows 2000 is an older operating system still used in some network environments as of 2010. Some network administrators use an old Windows 2000 computer as a backup server for archived files and applications. When managing a Windows 2000 server, you need to reboot the computer after applying security patches and updates. Remotely reboot a computer using the Windows "shutdown" utility.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button on your local desktop machine. Enter "cmd" into the search text box and press "Enter." This opens the Windows command line.

    • 2

Enter "shutdown /?" to view a list of options and syntax rules for the shutdown command.

    • 3

Enter the following command to reboot the Windows 2000 computer:

      shutdown /r /m \\computer /c

The "/r" indicates that the shutdown command should reboot the computer instead of just shutting it down. Replace "computer" with the name of the Windows 2000 machine. Finally, the "/c" switch forces all programs to close before rebooting.

    • 4

Enter the administrator password if you are prompted. This only occurs if you are not already logged into the machine as a network administrator.
