How do I Check for Missing or Corrupt Files Using OS CD XP?

The Windows XP CD allows you to reformat and reinstall the operating system on your computer. It is also includes a restoration functionality, know as a "repair installation." The repair installation will replace all the Windows XP system files, checking for missing files and replacing corrupt files. All your system settings, applications and files are left intact, but the underlying XP system is restored to working order.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the Windows XP operating system disc included with the computer, into the CD-ROM disc drive. Restart the computer. Boot from the disc by pressing any key when the screen displays "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." If the option to boot from the disc does not display, you may need to configure your system to boot from the CD-ROM drive--see Tips.

Press "Enter" at the Welcome Screen. Do not press "R" at the Welcome Screen. Accept the license agreement by pressing "F8." The OS CD will detect your Windows XP installation.

Tips & Warnings

  • To boot from the CD-ROM drive, restart the computer and press "F2" once every second until the "BIOS Settings" screen appears.
