Allow your cables only the length they need to get the job done. Loop the excess back and forth in 2- to 3-inch loops and use a twist tie to secure the loops. This will eliminate cable slack and prevent the cables from becoming tangled.

Label each cable with a tag taped a few inches from the end that plugs into your computer. Use a premade label or fold a piece of masking tape over the cord to make the tag. Use a marker to label the tag with a description such as "printer," "mouse" or "external hard drive." Cables that remain permanently plugged into the computer need labeling so you will always know what not to unplug.

Thanks! Great article! One product I found that also works great for this is called Cable Buddy, a plastic collar with attached bungee that helps label and wrap up loose cables. Very easy to use and stays conveniently on cable without leaving any sticky residue if you ever want to remove.
