How to Install Quake 2 on Windows XP
"Quake II" is a first-person shooting PC game that was originally released back in the 90s for the Windows 98 operating system. For those with later machines with the XP operating system installed, compatibility issues may prevent the game from installing or playing. Luckily, these issues can be circumvented in just a few minutes, allowing users with XP to play the classic game on modern machines.

1
Place the "Quake II" CD into the computer's CD drive.

2
Go to "My Computer" which can be accessed from the "Start" tab, and right click on the "Quake II" CD, prompting submenu to pop up. Left click "Browse" on this submenu.

-
3
Copy all of the files on the CD onto a folder on your hard drive. To make things easier, you should create a "Quake II" folder on your desktop to deposit everything into.
-
4
Locate the installation program, which should be called "install.exe," and create a shortcut to it on your desktop by right clicking it, then selecting "create shortcut."
-
5
Right click the shortcut icon created in Step 4 and then left click "Properties." Left click the "Compatibility" tab at the top of the window that will pop up, then check off "Windows 98."
-
6
Double click the "install.exe" shortcut, and the game should begin installing on your machine. You may receive an error message saying that there is no CD in the drive. Disregard this message, because the game will install anyway.
-
7
Locate and download a patch online called "q2-3_20-x86-full.exe." This can be found on numerous gaming websites, including Gamespot and ID Software.
-
8
Double click the patch to install it. The game should now be fully functional on an XP system.
