How to Become a Licensed Insurance Broker in Denver

How to Become a Licensed Insurance Broker in Denver thumbnail
Insurance brokers in Colorado must be licensed to sell products.

A career in insurance sales can be highly rewarding for professionals with good people skills and a desire to help others. In Colorado, all insurance brokers must be licensed by the state prior to selling any insurance products. Follow this series of steps to become licensed to sell the most common types of insurance such as life and auto. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies Division of Insurance website has instructions for obtaining alternative licenses for products such as title and travel-ticket insurance.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in a pre-licensing education class. The classes you need are determined by the licenses you wish to obtain. A complete list of approved course providers, including classes offered in Denver, is available on the Pearson VUE website. Each class will charge a fee for participation.

    • 2

Obtain your course provider's five-digit code once the class is complete. You must furnish this information to the test provider in order to schedule your exams.

    • 3

Schedule your state exams. You must pass one exam for each type of license you wish to obtain. When scheduling, you must provide your legal name, address, telephone number, date of birth, name of exams you must take, preferred date of exams and testing center and the five-digit code from your pre-licensing class provider. You may schedule your exam(s) by phone at 800-274-2616, online at www.pearsonvue.com or by fax at 888-204-6291. A fax reservation form and list of testing centers can be found in the "Colorado Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook."

    • 4

Pay the exam fee when you make the exam reservation. As of August, 2010, the exam fee is $73.00 per exam.

    • 5

Obtain the reservation confirmation number. You must present this information on the date of the exams.

    • 6

Go to your testing center on the date of the exams. Bring two forms of signature-bearing identification and your reservation confirmation number. Arrive at the testing center at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the exam.

    • 7

After passing your exam, apply for your license at www.sircon.com/colorado. Click "Apply for a License" from the left side of the screen. Follow the on-screen instructions and pay the appropriate fees. As of August, 2010, the licensing fees are $71.00 per line of authority.

    • 8

Once the license is issued, print your license by visiting the Sircon website and clicking "Print a license" from the left side of the screen. Follow the on-screen instructions and pay the printing fee. As of August, 2010, the fee is $5.00.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you must take more than one exam, you can likely take them all on the same day at the same testing center. While some people will prefer to space out the exams in order to prepare more fully, others will take advantage of the ability to satisfy all testing requirements in a single day to avoid multiple trips to the test site.

  • Study adequately for the exams. If you must retake an exam due to a failing grade, you must submit your original failing score when retaking the test and pay an additional examination fee.

  • Be sure to submit all required materials and follow all instructions. Failure to meet the application requirements may delay the issuing of your license or cause it to be denied.
