Finish carpentry is one of the most enjoyable jobs in construction. Finish carpenters don't have to deal with heavy lumber, itchy insulation, dangerous electricity, messy paint or the brutal elements outside. Although it takes experience and dedication to master, finish work is a rewarding and interesting craft. Spending some time reading carpentry books can help you get a feel for what you'll be asked to do, and is a worthwhile investment. Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with finish carpentry terminology. Know the correct names for your tools, the types of materials you will be working with, and the operations you will need to perform. Contractors will expect you to be able to express yourself clearly, and they will expect you to understand what they are talking about when they tell you what needs to be done. Reading carpentry books is one of the best ways to learn the language of the trade.

    • 2

Gain some experience working with a carpenter who has been doing finish work for a while. While there are various different ways to reach most construction objectives (i.e: trimming a house), there are tried-and-true methods that are best learned from veteran builders. If possible, work with someone who can help you build your confidence while showing you the tricks of the trade, rather than someone who barks orders at you and then criticizes whatever you do.

    • 3

Start learning finish carpentry by learning how to install trim. Run baseboards, hang crown molding, case doors and windows. This is what most finish carpenters spend the majority of their time doing. When you are ready, learn to install doors and windows plumb and level.

    • 4

Learn how to install cabinets level and true. Refine your craft by setting high standards for the quality of work that you do. Don't rush the process--that only leads to mistakes. As your experience grows and you build confidence, you will learn to perform each task more quickly without sacrificing quality. The more projects you complete successfully, the more ready you'll be to tackle new and bigger challenges.
