Instructions for Using a Butt Out Deer Field-Dressing Tool
When field-dressing a deer, failure to tie the anal cavity shut can result in tainted meat. Before the invention of Hunter Specialties Butt Out tool, hunters had to use their fingers to pull the anal cavity out far enough to tie off the anal opening. If the hunter had even the smallest cut on his hand, then he risked the possibility of infection. Following the Butt Out tool's instructions will allow the hunter to remove 10 inches of the deer's intestine without reaching inside of the deer's cavity.

Hang the deer by its hind legs on a deer field-dressing gambrel. A gambrel has two leg hooks and a hanging hook. A gambrel's leg hooks hold a deer's legs apart during the cleaning process, and the hanging hook holds the gambrel at the desired height.

Put on disposable rubber gloves. Cut the hide around the deer's anus with a knife. Keep about 1/2 inch of hide around the opening.

Push the Butt Out tool's shaft into the deer's anus until the handle touches the hide. The Butt Out tool has a shaft with four hooks located near its end and a handle.

Twist the Butt Out tool's handle 1 1/2 turns. The hooks will grab the deer's intestine.

Pull the Butt Out tool's handle until 10 inches of the deer's intestine have pulled out of the deer. Use a firm and stead motion. Yanking the handle will rip the intestines and the now contaminated hooks will grab the meat.

Tie a string tightly around the exposed intestine between the end of the Butt Out tool and the deer's hide. Leave about one inch between the string and the end of the Butt Out tool.

Cut the intestine near the end of the Butt Out tool. Leave as much intestine as possible between the cut and the string.

Remove the anus and cut section of intestine from the Butt Out tool. Wash the Butt Out tool before storing it.
