How to Install Second Life on an Eee PC

Second Life is a popular virtual world program. Users, known as Residents, interact with each other and perform daily life activities with their avatars. Since it is such a complex program, it requires a large amount of space when downloading. Smaller computers and netbooks, like the Asus Eee PC, may not have enough available space or the image will be distorted. Fortunately, Second Life users can still operate the program using the Eee PC.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Second Life website. Click "Downloads" under "Help."

    • 2

Download the Second Life Viewer for Windows XP/Vista. If you are given an error message due to lack of free space, insert the flash drive and save the Viewer on it, then install.

    • 3

Open Second Life. The program will work, but the images will be slightly distorted due to the Eee PC's screen resolution.

    • 4

Click on the "Me" menu. A menu will drop down. Click on "Preferences," then "Graphics" and make sure "Run in Window" isn't checked.

    • 5

Change the ratio to 5:3 in the "Graphics" menu.

    • 6

Open the Second Life folder on your hard drive or flash drive. Then open "User Settings."

    • 7

      Open "Settings.xml" in Notepad.

    • 8

Change the "Full Screen Aspect Ratio" so it reads <FullScreenAspectRatio value="1.66666"/>. Then change the resolution height to 480 and the width to 800.

    • 9

Save "Settings.xml" and open Second Life up again. Second Life will then run normally on your Eee PC.
