How to Skimboard on Waves

A skimboard resembles one half of a surfboard. Like surfing, it requires balance and the ability to ride a wave. Skimboarding takes place closer to the shore, though. Learning how to skimboard is a fairly simple task, but it takes practice to learn to do it skillfully and without falling down.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for a small wave to approach that is not too far from shore.

    • 2

Hold the skimboard in front of you so that the pointed end faces outward.

    • 3

Place one hand on the middle of the left side, and place the other hand on the back edge of the skimboard.

    • 4

Place the board on a thin layer of water, and get onto it by running onto it. Do not jump on the board.

    • 5

Put your left foot up onto the board and turn it inward.

    • 6

Put the right foot onto the board after the left, and place it toward the back of the board.

    • 7

Shift your weight to one side of the board as the wave approaches you. Shift your weight to the left side of the board if you want to turn left into the wave. Shift your weight to the right side of the board if you want to turn right into the wave.

    • 8

Try to keep your balance as you turn away from the wave and toward the shore. Ride the wave into the sand.
