How to Tweak Windows XP for Speed
You can perform a number of maintenance and updated tasks that will improve your computer's performance under Windows XP. When your hard disk becomes cluttered, or when you have unneeded programs installed, your computer's speed can decrease. You can remove unused programs from your hard disk to free up disk space and reduce the number of processes running in the background, which will improve your computer's speed. You can tweak Windows XP for speed with the "Disk Cleanup" tool.

Click the "Start" button, and then click the "My Computer" icon in the Start menu. This opens the "My Computer" window.

Right-click the icon for the hard drive you want to clean, and then select "Properties" in the context menu. This opens the "Local Disk Properties" dialog box. By default, the dialog box opens to the "General" tab.

Click the "Disk Cleanup" button. This opens the "Disk Cleanup" dialog box opens. Disk Cleanup examines your hard drive and then presents a set of options for freeing up space.

Click to select the check boxes next to the files you want to delete in the "Files to Delete" list, and then click "OK." Disk Cleanup will remove the specified files. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
