How Do I Prevent Abuse by Elder Caregivers?
Abuse is a serious problem among the elderly. They are less able to defend themselves from physical harm or financial exploitation and are often isolated from people who could protect them. Since the elderly may have memory issues or physical impairments, caregivers may try to take advantage, which is another form of abuse. It's important for people to understand how to prevent abuse of the elderly by caregivers.

1
Look for signs of unusual behavior, like the caregiver and the patient arguing often or the patient not speaking when the caregiver is around. Observe how the patient and the caregiver interact. Changes in the patient's behavior or personality may be due to abuse by the caregiver.
-
2
Note the physical condition of the elderly person. Check for any bruising or reports of "accidents." Note if the patient has been bathed and appropriately dressed and whether his surroundings are clean.

-
3
Keep an eye on the patient's pill bottles and make sure the medications are being used in the proper doses.
-
4
Make sure there is someone responsible for the patient's finances. Someone besides the patient should check the elderly person's financial transactions on a regular basis.
-
5
Visit the patient often and spend time alone with her. Ask how she is doing and let her know you are concerned for her welfare and that she can confide in you.
