Set up automatic login for your Windows 2000 machine.

The Windows 2000 operating system allows you to set user accounts and profiles. These profiles are accessed by each user who uses the computer after they enter a password. If you have Windows 2000 running on a home computer, this level of account protection is not necessary. Windows 2000 allows you to set automatic login for a default username and password, so you do not need to log in each time you want to use the machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run." Enter "regedit" into the text box and click "OK." This opens your Windows Registry Editor.

    • 2

Navigate to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" registry key.

    • 3

Double-click the "DefaultUserName" key. Enter the username you want to use to automatically log in to the machine. Click "OK" to save your settings.

    • 4

Double-click the "DefaultPassword" key, enter the password and click "OK." If this key does not already exist, right-click the white space in the registry details. Select "Add Value" and choose "REG_SZ" as the data type. In the new value window, enter "DefaultPassword" for the registry value name and enter the password used to log in the username you entered.

    • 5

Close the registry and reboot the computer. The next time you boot the machine, Windows automatically logs you in, so you do not need to manually enter a username and password.
