How to Expand RAM in Sony VAIO

How to Expand RAM in Sony VAIO thumbnail
The RAM is easily upgraded on a Sony VAIO laptop.

Random access memory, or RAM, is the primary volatile memory storage device used for running programs on a computer. Expanding the RAM of a computer can speed up program loading, processing time and the overall speed of a computer. Like most laptops, Sony VIAO laptops use standard SO-DIMM memory chips. The procedure for upgrading RAM in a Sony VAIO is typically no different than other brand laptops and only requires a screwdriver.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Removing the Old Module

    • 1

Turn off the computer. Disconnect all wires, batteries and devices connected to the laptop. Turn the computer over and allow the system to cool. Sony recommends allowing an hour to pass to let metal components cool.

    • 2

Ground yourself momentarily by touching an unpainted metal object that is grounded, such as a pipe, radiator or faucet. This helps prevent electrostatic discharge damage to your computer.

    • 3

Locate your Sony VAIO memory bay cover on the bottom of the laptop. Refer to the VAIO manual for your specific make and model for more details. Remove the screws securing the memory cover and lift the cover from the bottom of the laptop. Place the screws in a safe location.

    • 4

Release the memory chips from the laptop motherboard by gently pushing on the metal tabs on either side of the chip. The memory will release and pop upward. Grasp the memory by the edges and gently pull the memory out from the laptop. Place the memory in an anti-static location for safekeeping. Repeat the process for all memory modules you wish to remove.

    Installing New Memory Modules

    • 5

Ground yourself momentarily by touching an unpainted metal object that is grounded, such as a pipe, radiator or faucet. This will help prevent electrostatic discharge damage to the memory modules. Open the memory packaging and gently remove a RAM memory module.

    • 6

Observe the notch in the memory module and align it with the notch in the memory slot. Install the new memory module by sliding it into the SO-DIMM memory slot at a 45-degree angle. Push the memory module flush against the bay until the two metal tabs on either side grasp it and snap into place. Repeat the process for each memory module you wish to install.

    • 7

Ensure that the memory modules are correctly seated and replace the memory bay cover. Replace the fastening screw(s) on the memory bay cover and reconnect batteries, wires and other components.

    • 8

Power on the computer. Allow the system to boot into Windows. Ensure the intended amount of memory is installed properly. If the full amount of memory is not detected, unplug the laptop and make sure that the memory is properly installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sony recommends that memory upgrades be performed by an authorized Sony Service Center.

  • To recognize more than 4 GB of RAM, a computer must be running a 64-bit operating system; a 32-bit operating system will still run, but will it ignore anything above what it can address.

  • Electrostatic Discharge can damage memory modules, disk drives, motherboards and other components. Do not work on a carpeted area and do not handle materials that produce or hold static electricity.
