How to Become a Travel Agent in the UK

How to Become a Travel Agent in the UK thumbnail
Travel agents are in high demand.

With many people choosing to vacation abroad rather than locally, travel agents are in a good position to take advantage of the market. Travel agent salaries range from £10,000 for trainees to more than £30,000 for senior agents, and you can choose to work in either an independent boutique agency catering to a select clientele, or in one of the larger household-name branches.

Instructions

    • 1

Gain a recognized qualification. While it is not essential to have qualifications beyond the high school GCSE examinations, qualifying in travel and tourism will give you a better chance of finding an ideal position within the travel and tourism industry. Contact your local college or university to inquire about travel and tourism diplomas and degrees.

    • 2

Search your local newspapers and online job boards for a trainee travel agent position. Your employer may then ask you to complete on-the-job or independent training through the Association of British Travel Agents, such as its Accredited Travel Professional scheme.

    • 3

Join organizations. Once you have gained all necessary training and experience, join a reputable organization--such as the Association of British Travel Agents--to project yourself as an accomplished professional.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider learning a second language. Travel agents who can converse with foreign clients and agents will be more valued in the industry.
