Restore your Dell Inspiron 1501 to a previous configuration using Windows XP's System Restore tool.

All editions of the Windows XP operating system come with Microsoft's System Restore utility pre-installed. The tool periodically takes snapshots of Windows' setup, including installed programs, drivers, hardware settings and registry values. Formally known as restore points, these snapshots can be loaded at a later date if the you need to restore your system to a previously functioning configuration. Once you understand the required steps, using System Restore on your Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop becomes a quick task.

      Close all open programs.

      Click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs," followed by "Accessories," "System Tools" and "System Restore."

      Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click "Next."

      Click a bold date on the calendar on the left-hand side of the System Restore window. The available restore points associated with that date appear on the right-hand side of the window.

      Single-click the name of the restore point you want to use.

      Click "Next."

      Click "Next" again. Your computer will automatically shut down and then reboot. Windows XP will restart using the restore point you selected previously.
