How to Put a Memory Chip into a Computer
Memory chips are designed to store bits of memory for the computer, allowing it to access information more efficiently. The more memory that is integrated into the computer, the faster it will access information. The memory chips are plugged into the motherboard and can be installed in just a few minutes. You can put a memory chip into a computer yourself, saving you the time and money of calling a computer repairman to install the chip for you.

Unplug the computer power cord from the electrical outlet before attempting to install a memory chip. Remove the power cable from the back of the computer case by hand.

Take any peripheral devices off the computer case. Unfasten the screws on the back of the computer case with a screwdriver, sliding the cover off the case and setting it out of the way.

Remove any static electrical charges by touching the exterior of the case before handling the electronic parts. Locate the empty memory module slots in the motherboard of the computer. The module slots will have two rows of pins and be about three-inches long.

Take the memory module out of the anti-static package and line the module up with the memory module slot, verifying that the notch in the bottom of the module is lined up with the gap in the memory slot.

Place the module into the slot, setting it firmly into position. Press down onto the edges of the module until the clips snap into place.

Slide the cover back over the computer case, securing the cover with screws. Plug the power cable into the back of the computer case.

Plug the power cord of the computer into the electrical outlet.
