Reset Microsoft Word 2007 manually from the Windows Registry Editor.

Microsoft Word stores two types of user-defined settings, according to Microsoft's website. Microsoft Word configuration settings affect the way Microsoft Word operates and are typically stored in the Windows registry and document files. Settings that control the formatting and appearance of documents are typically stored in documents and templates. You can reset Microsoft Word 2007 to its default settings by manually deleting all of the user-defined Microsoft Word registry keys from the Windows registry.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Windows "Start" menu and select "Run." Type "regedit" into the "Run" dialog window and click "OK" to load the Windows Registry Editor utility.

    • 2

Expand the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder by double-clicking the folder or by clicking the plus sign beside the folder. Expand the "Software," "Microsoft" and "Office" folders as well. Open the "12.0" folder to expand the "Word" sub-folder.

    • 3

Right-click the "Data" registry key and select "Delete." Answer "Yes" to the dialog window asking if you are sure you wish to delete this registry key. Delete the "Options," "Common" and "SharedTools" registry keys as well. Close the Windows Registry Editor.

    • 4

Open Microsoft Word and follow the instructions provided in the "Setup Wizard" dialog window. The Microsoft Word setup program runs automatically the first time you open Microsoft Word after changes have been made in the Microsoft Word's registry. This will rebuild the Microsoft Word registry and restore the deleted registry keys using the default Microsoft Word settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not delete any Microsoft Word registry keys that are not specifically mentioned in this article or on the Microsoft "How to Reset User Options and Registry Settings in Word" website. Microsoft Word cannot repair all of the Windows registry keys using the Microsoft Word setup program.
