How to Rent Out an Apartment in Chicago

For apartment renters, you may be looking to simply sublease your current apartment. Regardless of the situation, the most effective way to find tenants is by placing time and dedication in the process. The more work you put into it, the quicker you may find a tenant. Your results may even attract a list of backup contacts for future renting opportunities.

Instructions

Craigslist

1. Navigate to the Chicago Craigslist website. Select "Post to Classifieds" on the top left corner of the homepage. Select "Housing Offered" and "Apts/housing for rent" on the following page. Click the area of Chicago the apartment is located.

2. Fill out the entire form to include information about the apartment, price, and photos if applicable. Include additional methods for interesting renters to contact you, such as a phone number, or simply leave it out. Interested parties will otherwise contact you by email. Input the address of the property and select whether pets are accepted.

3. Select "Continue" to navigate to the following page. Review your ad and press "Continue" or "edit." Read the Terms of Use and press "Accept the terms of use." Type in the words included in the security image and press "Continue" to finalize your post.

Chicago Tribune

1. Visit the Chicago Tribune newspaper, call, or navigate to the website. Bring any information concerning the rental if you visit the newspaper, along with cash, or a credit or debit card if the option is available. Have the same information and a credit or debit card if calling the rental ad

2. Place an ad through the website by navigating to the homepage and selecting "Contact Us" beneath "About/Find" at the bottom of the homepage. Select the "Place an ad" link and click the "List My Rental" icon. Click "Real Estate - Rentals" and "Residential Rentals."

3. Select the corresponding link that contains the location of the apartment. Choose a package by selecting "View Details" and "Continue" after reading over the details. Select the zone you wish to advertise to, such as various parts of the city.

4. Create the ad by filling in the details concerning the rental and pressing "Save and continue." Select the dates to run the ad, confirm the ad by reading over it, and pay using a credit or debit card.

Flyers

1. Make flyers from your home computer using you word processing software. Some software includes templates, but the editing tools make it easy to create a template of your own.

2. Input details of the apartment, price, and pictures if any are available. Print out as many copies as you want to hang around the city.

3. Visit local coffee shops, small businesses, public areas, and even your place of work. Inquire about leaving the flyers on a community bulletin board or near other similar flyers. Most importantly, hand a flyer on the floor on laminate one and stick it in the yard for people who pass the property by.

Tips & Warnings

• Craigslist creates a private email address that users can email you using. This email address forwards these emails to your personal email so that the potential renters will not receive your personal information.

• Always meet potential renters at the apartment for rent or public location. Do not invite potential renters to meet you at home or travel with you until you get to know and trust them.
