How to Properly Tie a Karate Rank Belt
Belts are used in karate to signify a student's progress and rank achievement in studying and learning the Japanese art of self-defense. To earn a new belt, the student must pass an examination. Students usually go through seven ranks, each associated with a different corresponding belt. The belts, in order, are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black. One of the first karate lessons a pupil learns is how to tie his karate belt.

Put on and tie your martial arts uniform jacket. Fold the karate belt in half.

Place the middle of the folded belt across the front of your waist, lining the belt up with your belly button. Wrap the karate belt around your body, bringing both ends back to the front of your body.

Tuck each loose end under and behind the belt. One strap should face downward. The other should face upward. Flip the top strap over the belt and across the top of the other strap.

Pull the top strap under and around the bottom of the belt. Pull both ends horizontally to tighten. The knot should be square-shaped.
