Active Directory is a tool used by Windows XP system administrators to add, modify and delete user accounts. Active Directory comes installed by default on Windows Server operating systems, but must be installed manually if you wish to use it on Windows XP Pro. You can easily add the functionality of Active Directory to your Windows XP Professional system by using the Microsoft Management Console.

Instructions

      Open your computer's Start menu and choose the "Run" option. Enter the command "mmc" (without quotes) into the "Open" box and press "Enter" to launch the Microsoft Management Console.

      Select the "File" option from the top of the console window. Choose "Add/Remove Snap-in" on this menu.

      Click the "Add" button. Select "Active Directory Users and Computers" from the list of available snap-in additions. Click on "Add" once again.

      Press the "Close" button. Select "OK."

      Reboot the computer to complete the installation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once Active Directory is installed, you can launch it from the folder named "Administrative Tools" inside the Control Panel.
