Refill kits make it easy to refill laser ink.

Laser printer ink cartridges are expensive to replace. Luckily, most of them can be successfully refilled at a fraction of the cost. Learning how to refill your laser ink cartridge isn't hard. Refill kits come with instructions specific for particular models of cartridges. Before you purchase a refill kit, make sure that your printer cartridge's model number is listed on the packaging. Not all refill kits can refill all cartridge types.

Instructions

Access the fill hole. The hole in some laser printer cartridges is covered by a cap on top of the printer cartridge. In this case simply pry off the cap to reveal the hole beneath.

Other holes are visible on top of the printer cartridge but need to be reopened. If this is the case, your refill kit will come with a hole-opening tool. Follow the printed instructions to use the tool to reopen the hole.

Assemble the syringe. Attach the needle to the syringe according to the manufacturer's instructions. If your syringe comes preassembled, skip to step 3.

    • 3

Fill the syringe with ink. Insert the needle into the ink well that is provided. Then fill the graduated syringe with the amount of ink recommended by the manufacturer for your particular model. If your syringe is prefilled, skip to step 4.

    • 4

Fill the ink reservoir. Insert the prefilled syringe into the refill hole and slowly dispense the ink by squeezing the syringe or depressing its plunger. If your syringe is prefilled, make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the amount of ink to dispense. Some syringes are filled with one refill of ink, and some contain enough for multiple refills.

    • 5

Cover or seal the refill hole. Most covers can be taped or snapped back on. Follow the refill kit's instructions for its replacement. If the hole must be resealed, use the sealant provided and follow the manufacturer's instructions for its application.

    • 6

Wipe away any ink from the surface of the cartridge with a paper towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Refill your cartridge as soon as possible. If it is allowed to dry out for even a few hours, the tiny holes on the head of the cartridge will become clogged with dried ink. After that happens, the refilled ink will have no way to come out of the cartridge.
