How to Become a Young Video Game Designer

Creating your own video games can be achieved through lots of practice.

Video games have become a booming business in the past decade. With many games being played today, some people suddenly have dreams of being a game designer. While there are colleges and universities that instruct their students on the basic and advanced skills required to make games, it is still possible to learn how to make games on your own. There is a big movement that showcases games created by amateurs. Some of these games, like the popular Cave Story, are even picked up and distributed by major gaming companies.

1. Play video games, trying every genre at least once. This may sound strange but writers are encouraged to read as song writers are encouraged to listen to music. This train of thought applies for those wishing to be game designers as well.

2. Study coding and programming. Use multiple sites and book, and always take notes.

3. Begin experimenting with various freeware video game making software. Many of these programs have a simpler programming method involved that will give you a basic understanding of how games are built.

4. Practice coding and programming tiny games and gradually make them more complex.

5. Join a video game making community and submit your games. In these communities, people will give you feedback on what you need to fix.

• If you want to make your own game from scratch, you will need to learn how to create your own characters. For this, you will need to learn some basic art skills for character design.
