How to Make Yarn Earrings

How to Make Yarn Earrings thumbnail
Choose any yarn color for a pair of earrings.

Make yarn earrings that pop with color and texture. Crochet a pair of earrings from baby soft yarn, mohair fiber, home-spun or regular 3-ply cotton or acrylic yarn for a quick project. Teach children how to crochet these earrings in place of the standard potholder or scarf for a simple afternoon project. Sell these lightweight earrings in school or holiday colors at fundraisers and craft fairs. Once you have mastered this simple technique, add different stitches to the main pattern for a variety of yarn earrings.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain 4 stitches with the yarn and the F crochet hook. Join the two ends with a slip stitch to form a ring or circle.

    • 2

Crochet 12 double crochet stitches into the ring. Push the stitches close together when the ring seems to be filled in. This will give more room to continue making the double crochet stitches. Slip stitch to join at the top of the first double crochet. There will be 12 stitches in the row. An experienced crocheter can change colors at this point to create a bi-color earring.

    • 3

Make a chain of 3 stitches. Double crochet in the top of the first double crochet. The chain-3 counts as a double crochet. Double crochet 2 times in each double crochet around the ring. This will make 24 double crochet stitches. Slip stitch to join. Pull the yarn up with the crochet hook to tighten the slip stitch. Cut the yarn leaving a 4- to 5- inch tail.

    • 4

Thread the large eye needle with the end of the yarn that is attached to the circular earring.

    • 5

Place the earring wire against the top of the circular yarn shape where the yarn tail is located.

    • 6

Sew the earring in place with an overlap stitch. Repeat the stitch until the wire is secured to the yarn circle.

    • 7

Cut away any excess yarn from the tail length or weave the end into the earring to hide it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Crochet an edge onto the earring for a simple change in the appearance. Make a chain of 5 stitches and slip stitch into the top of the second double crochet from the hook. Repeat around the entire earring.
