There are many different types of inmates at a correctional facility, from those convicted of minor offenses to those housed on death row. Therefore, the method to view an inmate differs depending on the reason for the incarceration and may vary from state to state. There are three basic types of visitation: contact, non-contact and general. Visitation rules are in place for the safety of visitors, staff and inmates.

Instructions

    • 1

Call ahead to the correctional facility to see if you are on the inmate's approved visitor list and the days and times visitation is allowed. Visitors are typically limited to two adults and two minors at any given time. If you are bringing a minor (under 18) ask about the procedures and paperwork necessary for the minor to come onto the property of the correctional facility. A minor must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Bring proper identification. Generally accepted forms of identification include a valid driver's license, or a military or state identification with photo. If you are not a U.S. citizen then a passport with photo is accepted. A security check will be conducted before meeting with the inmate either by walking through a metal detector or a pat search. This is to check for contraband, which is strictly forbidden. If you are unsure of what the correctional facility considers contraband ask at the visitors desk. Lock your cigarettes, lighters, etc., in your vehicle before coming into the facility. No exchange of items are allowed without the permission of a prison supervisor.

Remain seated where you are instructed when you are visiting an inmate. It is important that you do not obstruct the view of the officer. There is no physical contact allowed. Each facility has its own rules for physical greetings, always ask if you're unsure. If you are viewing the inmate via the phone you may not touch the barrier or communication devices and must remain seated during the entire visit. There is no loud, abusive, or sexual communication allowed.

Turn off cell phones and place in lockers if available in the visitors area. If lockers are not provided you can lock your phone in your vehicle before visitation or inquire at the visitors desk where they want you to put your cell phone. Remember, it is a privilege for the inmate to have visitation and the rules are there to protect you and create an environment that is also safe for the minors visiting their parents or family members.
