How to Size Photo Frames
Properly framing your photos or pieces of artwork is just as important as choosing what to frame. While standard frame sizes are available, many times a photo is not printed to a standard size. Knowing how to frame your piece will go a long way toward helping you pick out that perfect frame to enhance your photo or artwork. Does this Spark an idea?

Cover the table with a clean piece of paper. Place your photo upside down on the paper.

Measure your photo both horizontally and vertically. Record the measurements.

Calculate the matting size. All photos should be matted before framing behind glass to help prevent the photo itself from adhering to the glass over time. The best rule is to add 1 to 1 1/2 inches to each side of the photo. Since the matte is designed to enhance the photo and not detract from it, adding the same amount to all 4 sides will center the photo in the matte and frame. The total measurement then becomes the inside measurement of your frame. For example, a 5x7 inch photo will matte to an 8x10 size frame which is a standard matte and frame size. If you have a 6x10 inch photo, your matte will measure 9x13 inches and this becomes the window size for your frame.

Purchase your frame. Again, both the frame and matte should be designed to enhance your photo. When choosing your frame, pick a style that draws the eye to the photo itself. Choose a frame color that can be found reflected in the photo. For example, a black and white photo frames well with a black matte and silver 1/2 inch frame. The silver frame and black matte draws the eye in toward the photo.
