Install a new PCI video card in your Dell Inspiron.

Dell first introduced the Inspiron line in 2007 as a series of higher end desktop models. Since then, the series has been reconfigured as a low cost entry for first time computer buyers. Although most of the Inspiron series come with on board video cards, it's possible to install a new PCI video card in a Dell Inspiron desktop if you want to change the computer's configuration. If there is already a PCI card in the system, it will first have to be removed before you can put the new one in.

Instructions

    • 1

Power down the Dell Inspiron Desktop. Unplug it from the wall.

    • 2

Open the Dell case. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws located at the back of the case, by the power supply. Remove the Inspiron case cover.

    • 3

Ground yourself by touching a metal object. This will help release any static electricity that is built up in your body, which can damage sensitive electronic circuits.

Locate the slot where you want to install the new PCI video card. The PCI slots are usually colored white, and have a notch at one end. If there is already a card in the slot, you will see the monitor cable plugged into the card, which should be disconnected before proceeding. Unscrew the Phillips head screw holding the card to the case with the Phillips head screwdriver. Lift the old card up and out of the slot.

    • 5

Unwrap the new card from its anti-static packaging. Hold the card by the edges and don't touch the circuits on the card itself. Align the card so that the back edge that contains the monitor ports is flush with the back of the computer case. Press the card gently into the PCI slot. Secure with the screw.

    • 6

Replace the case cover. Secure with the screws.

    • 7

Plug the computer back in. Boot up the system.

    • 8

Install the new video drivers as prompted by the system or as according to your PCI video card manufacturer.
