The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is the main program that operates any computer. When you press the "Power" button to turn on the computer, the BIOS loads the operating system, which then in turn loads any other programs. You can change the BIOS settings, but if you aren't an advanced computer user it isn't recommended. Use this article as a guide as you get into the BIOS on a Toshiba Portege laptop.

Hit the "Power" button to turn on the computer. Press the F12 key on the keyboard. This must be done prior to the operating system loading; if the Windows OS logo has popped up, it is too late. Boot into Windows, restart the computer, and try again.

Pressing F12 on a Toshiba Portege laptop takes you directly into the BIOS, and any settings can now be changed. Note that pressing F12 is specific to a Toshiba Portege. Getting into the BIOS is done always by hitting one of the F keys, but the number is different and depends on the model and make of computer.

Select "Save and Quit." This will save any changes you've made, exit out of the BIOS, and restart the computer.
