As you use your computer, files, space and pieces of information collect on the computer, which eventually causes the computer to run more slowly. Also, often times the computer becomes cluttered when you have an excessive amount of icons, folders and other unnecessary items on the computer. By cleaning up the computer, you are able to get rid of the clutter and also make the computer run faster.

        Click "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Add/Remove Programs." Scroll through the list of installed software, and click "Delete" or "Uninstall" next to any software that you no longer use.

        Scroll through the folders on your computer and delete anything you no longer have use for. This includes images, documents, spreadsheets and anything similar that is not in use. Empty your Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and clicking "Empty."

        Click "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "System Tools" > "Disk Cleanup." Check off all of the boxes that appear on the gray pop-up box, and click "Delete." This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of files that need removed.

        Click "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "System Tools" > "Disk Defragmenter." Click the driver you wish to clean. The C: drive is typically the letter of your hard drive. Run no other programs while doing the defragment, and leave the computer alone until the process is finished. This again can take up to a few hours, so often it is best to run the program overnight. Restart your computer when finished.
