How to Repair the MSN Toolbar

The MSN toolbar was a browser add-on that added a quick search box for the MSN search engine by Microsoft. Over the years, Microsoft’s search engine has gone through a few reincarnations--from MSN to Live Search to Bing. Most likely, if you are having trouble using the MSN toolbar, it is a result of it simply being outdated. It is best to download the latest toolbar from Microsoft, known now as the Bing Bar.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the application removal utility in the “Control Panel” (opened via “Start” menu). On Windows XP, the utility is called “Add/Remove Programs.” On Vista and later, the utility is located in “Programs > Uninstall a Program.”

    • 2

Locate the “MSN Toolbar” in the listed of installed applications and click “Remove/Uninstall.” Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the outdated toolbar.

    • 3

Open Internet Explorer and navigate to the Microsoft Toolbar page (see Resources). Click “Download Now” to download the installer to your desktop.

    • 4

Double-click the downloaded installer. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. You may have to restart your computer.

    • 5

Launch Internet Explorer. The MSN toolbar will be replaced with the Bing Bar, with full support for the latest versions of Internet Explorer.
