The Internet Crime Report, a document released yearly by the FBI, states that the third biggest offense reported by law enforcement is credit card fraud. Credit companies, such as Visa, provide customers with protection features to avoid fraud; protection features that include monitoring suspicious activity, withholding charges and notifying the three credit bureaus for any suspicious activity.

  1. Activation

    • 1

      Call the automated phone number. Each new Visa debt card you receive comes with a automated 800 number used to activate the card.

      Enter or speak your home address and zip code. When you register your debit card, you will be asked to give your home address and zip code for security purposes.

      Enter or speak the last four digits of your Social Security number. Your card will be registered and activated to make purchases.

    Register with Visa Verified

    • 4

      Register your debit card on Visa's website (see Resources). As stated by Visa, Verified is another security feature that detects and prevents fraud while you shop online.

      Enter your debit card number and password on the Verified homepage (see Resources). Verified sign-up requires a six-character password.

    • 6

      Finish the verification process. Each time you purchase an online item, the Verified program window will appear and ask for your Verified password. This process adds more security while you shop online.
