The wireless adapter needs to be enabled to connect to a router.

Laptop computers are able to connect to the Internet via a wireless connection if the option has been enabled on the machine. In order for your laptop to connect to a wireless router or a WiFi hotspot, the wireless network adapter needs to be enabled on the machine. This can be done by turning on the feature in the operating system and then connecting to an available wireless network.

Instructions

  1. Enable Network Connection

      Click the "Start" button and then select the option for the "Control Panel." Click the option for "Network and Internet." Select the option for "Network and Sharing Center."

      Click the "Manage Network Connections" option from the Tasks list on the left panel. This will open the Network Connections window.

      Right-click on the Wireless Connection under the section for LAN or High Speed Internet. Select "Enable" from the context menu to turn on the wireless adapter. Alternatively, you can access the network adapter through the Device Manager.

      Click the Start button and the right-click the "My Computer" option and select "Properties" from the context menu. This will display System Properties window.

      Go to the Hardware tab and then click the "Device Manager" button. Scroll down to the section for Network Adapters. Right-click on the wireless adapter and then select "Properties" from the context menu.

      Go to the General tab and then select "Use the device (Enable)" from the Device usage drop down. Click the "OK" button to save the change.

    Connect to Wireless Network

      Right-click on the network icon that is located on the right-side of the system tray. This will display a list of available wireless networks.

      Click on the wireless network that you want to connect to.

      Put a check in the "Connect automatically" box if you want the system to automatically connect to the wireless network. Click the "Connect" button to connect to the wireless network.

Tips & Warnings

  • Enter the network security key, if security has been enabled for the network.

  • If an external adapter is being used, you will need to install the software drivers before attempting to connect to a wireless network.
