How to Install a Salvaged Fireplace Mantel thumbnail
Install a wood fireplace mantel in your home.

The amount of difficulty it takes to install a salvaged fireplace mantel depends on the condition of the mantel and the final finish used after installation. Mantels may consist of horizontal pieces only or horizontal and vertical sections that you will mount the wall. You'll need to use fasteners that are barely visible to install ornate mantels with clear coat finishes. You can easily cover fasteners with filler and paint when you use them on mantels with painted finishes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mark horizontal and vertical lines with the level above and on the sides of the fireplace where the mantel will be located. Lean the mantel against the wall and check for proper fit and alignment. Mark the outline of the mantel on the wall.

    • 2

Locate wall studs inside the marked mantel area. Drive a nail through the Sheetrock to locate the studs if necessary. Nail holes behind the mantel area are harmless and will not be visible after you install the mantel.

    • 3

Drill holes in the mantel at the stud locations to use for wood screws or nail locations. You can angle the screws and nails if necessary to hide them. Countersink the head below the surface to leave room for wood putty or filler and paint. Secure the mantel at several locations on the horizontal and vertical pieces.

Tips & Warnings

  • Uneven walls require additional trim molding to cover gaps between mantel and wall.

  • You can add wood glue between the mantel and the wall for extra holding strength.

  • When securing the mantel to the wall, allow for added weight considerations when placing additional items on fireplace shelf.

  • Heavy mantels need vertical supports and need to be secured to the wall with larger bolts or wood screws to avoid the mantel detaching from wall and causing possible injury.
