How to Get Bankruptcy Clients

How to Get Bankruptcy Clients thumbnail
Bankruptcy clients can be easy to find during a recession or other economic downturn.

People seeking bankruptcy clients are usually attorneys specializing in filing bankruptcy petitions. Companies offering an alternative to bankruptcy, such as debt settlement firms and consumer credit counseling agencies, may also try to attract people who are thinking about filing for bankruptcy. There are a number of ways to find clients, with some methods being more expensive than others. Word-of-mouth and social networking can be very effective for getting bankruptcy clients, but other avenues should also be explored.

Instructions

    • 1

Check court records for people who have successfully been sued in court for failing to pay their debts. Check the records yourself at the clerk of court's office or hire a firm to send you notices of civil judgments filed in your area. People with civil judgments often become candidates for bankruptcy, because in some cases bankruptcy allows them to permanently avoid paying the debt. Create a direct mail campaign to convert some of the leads into clients.

Contact debt settlement firms. Debt settlement allows people to settle debts for less than the full amount owed, and for-profit debt settlement firms will handle the process. However, some people become disenchanted with debt settlement, which can take years--compared to just a few months with Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Network with debt settlement firms to compile a list of people who have dropped out of their debt settlement programs and may be considering bankruptcy. Be sure to abide by privacy laws as you create a direct-mail list. Use the campaign to convert some of the leads into clients.

Contact credit counselors for referrals. Counselors, such as those affiliated with Consumer Credit Counseling Service, almost always recommend debt management plans as an alternative to bankruptcy. However, the counselors may refer clients who are adamant about filing for bankruptcy to qualified attorneys. Network with credit counselors all over town and ask them to recommend your services. Turn the leads into clients after being contacted.

Advertise on TV, radio, the Internet and in print. Advertise on radio shows dedicated to credit matters or on Internet blogs discussing bankruptcy. Make sure your advertising is highly targeted and will reach an audience that may have serious credit problems. Convert the in-bound calls to clients.
