How to Feed Feather Duster Worms

How to Feed Feather Duster Worms thumbnail
Feather duster worms are one type of organism found in reef aquariums.

Feather duster worms are aquatic and live in reef aquariums as well as the ocean. Generally, they eat plankton, bacteria and other microorganisms naturally present in a well-maintained reef aquarium. However, if the aquarium is not at least 2 months old, there will not be enough naturally-occurring food for the worms. You will have to feed the feather duster worms infusoria, which is one of the largest forms of protozoa visible to the naked eye. You can procure this organism with relative ease.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the nearest stagnant body of water. This includes ponds, marshes and swamps where there is excessive algae.

    • 2

Scoop the top layer of water and algae into the glass jar. Seal the lid.

    • 3

Wait a few days for the bottom water to become clear and the top water to become full of the algae and infusoria.

    • 4

Use the turkey baster to draw up some of the algae and infusoria, as well as some clear water. If the water source of the infusoria is not salt or brine water, do not worry. A minimal amount of fresh water will not damage the environment.

    • 5

Squeeze the turkey baster contents into the aquarium. Rinse out the turkey baster with the salt water in the aquarium. Repeat this once a day until your aquarium is two months old.
