Setting “hot keys,” or shortcut keys, on an ASUS laptop is performed using Windows functions. Hot keys are keys or key combinations that, when clicked will open a file or folder, or start a program. Several hot keys are preprogrammed for Windows commands. For example, the hot key combination of CTRL + ALT + DEL will prompt the user to reboot the computer. See the complete list of Windows 7 preprogrammed keyboard shortcut keys in the Resources section. However, hot keys may also be easily configured in Windows.

Step 1

Click the Windows desktop and select “New” from the context menu.

Step 2

Select the “Shortcut “option. The Shortcut dialog box will open.

Step 3

Click the “Browse” button and navigate to the file, folder or program that will be associated with the shortcut and hot key. Select the file, folder or program and click “OK.” The shortcut is created on the desktop.

Step 4

Right-click on the new shortcut icon and select “Properties.”

Step 5

Click the “Shortcut” tab.

Step 6

Type a key or key combination in the input box labeled “Shortcut Key.”

Step 7

Click the “Apply” button. The hot key has been created for the specified file, folder or program on the laptop.
