How to Unpack a Torrent File

How to Unpack a Torrent File thumbnail
Torrent files can be used to download anything.

Unpacking a torrent file means to view all the data associated with that torrent file. The torrent file (.torrent) is a small file that contains a list of file names, sizes, trackers and information where to download information associated with the torrent from. The only way to access or unpack a torrent file is using a torrent client, such as bittorrent, utorrent or azures. There is no native Windows or Mac software that is compatible with torrent files.

Examine the file properties. The torrent file should now be visible in the download or transfer window of the torrent client program. Right click on the file and click "Properties." This will bring up all the information associated with the torrent file. The file has now been unpacked and is able to be viewed. In the properties window the user will see the "Trackers," "Peers," "Pieces," "Files" and "Speed." Trackers are sites that link the user with other users sharing the same completed torrent file. Peers are the specific individuals connected to the user and this file. Pieces will tell the user how far the download has completed. Files show the user what files are associated with the download of the torrent. Speed tells users how fast they are uploading and downloading the torrent file.

Download the torrent file. Once the torrent file is in the torrent client it will download automatically. Wait for the torrent file to connect with other users and wait for the files associated with the .torrent file to download. The "ETA" or "download time" status bar will indicate how long the download should take. Once the download has finished view the files associated with the torrent. Now the user has all the information the torrent contains, and the torrent file has successfully been downloaded and unpacked.
