How to Rename a File Extension in Vista
File extensions are what tell your computer operating system what type of file you are working with, and what program should be used to open that file. Windows keeps a list of what extensions are associated with what programs, and every time you select a file to open, this operating system consults this list and launches the correct program to open your file. Sometimes a file may be stored with the incorrect extension. This usually happens when downloading certain files from the Internet, or when typing the file extension manually in a program like notepad. Fortunately, changing the file extension is a quick and easy process.

Tips & Warnings
In some cases, programs can save files in multiple formats, meaning with multiple extensions. If you have a file that you want saved in a different format, for instance, a text file that you want to save as HTML, start by opening it in the default program for the current file extension, then going to "File" and "Save as." See if you can select the extension and file type you want from the drop down list, or if you can select "All Files," which will allow you to type a new extension when saving the file.
