How to Train Geckos

How to Train Geckos thumbnail
Train your gecko slowly and patiently.

Geckos and other lizards are quite limited in what they can learn. They can not be potty-trained and will not do tricks for you. They can, however, with care and patience, be trained to let you handle them. Give your gecko the chance to get comfortable with you and, in the long run you will be able to hold it or have it sit on you without a struggle.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow your gecko to get comfortable with its habitat. If you have a new pet, don't disturb it for a few weeks. Only put your hands inside to give it food or water or to clean the habitat.

    • 2

Gently touch the gecko a couple times a day for several days. Wear medical gloves the first time in case your gecko attempts to bite you. Your gecko may run away, walk away, bite or ignore you. Keep touching your gecko gently until it tolerates your presence without bolting or biting.

    • 3

Place your hand over or under the gecko in its habitat to get it used to the feeling of your whole hand.

    • 4

Gently hold the gecko inside your hand in the habitat. Restrain it lightly to prevent it from crawling away, but let it leave if it attempts to forcefully flee or bite. Pet it gently if it seems calm.

    • 5

Pick the gecko up for a few minutes, and hold it in your hands. Put it in the habitat right away if it gets grouchy or agitated.

    • 6

Gradually hold the gecko for longer and longer periods. Handle it at least once and, preferably, twice a day. With frequent handling, the gecko will get comfortable with you and stay socialized.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't neglect holding your gecko once it is trained. Geckos and other reptiles can become less social if their owners cease to hold them regularly.
