How to Install RAM in a Dell Inspiron 1200
RAM (Random Access Memory) is crucial to your laptop's overall performance. It is also one of the quickest ways to speed up your laptop. If your computer is starting to run slow, it may mean that your don't have enough RAM installed in your laptop. The Dell Inspiron 1200 comes installed with 256 MB of DDR SDRAM. It can be upgraded to 1 GB of DDR SDRAM. RAM for your Dell Inspiron can be purchased online (see Resources).

Shut down your laptop and fold down the LCD screen. Disconnect the AC power cable from its socket. Flip the laptop over. Position it so the front opening is facing forward. Locate the battery pack at the top of the laptop. Press on the release button and lift the battery out of the laptop.

Locate the memory compartment in the upper left corner of the laptop. Remove the single Phillips-head screw securing the memory compartment cover in place. Remove the cover from the laptop and set it aside.

Spread the retaining white latches on either side of the RAM module with your fingertips. Grasp the RAM module and tilt it up at an angle. Slide the module out of the memory compartment.

Align the two notches on the new RAM with the notches inside the memory compartment. Tilt the module upward at an angle. Slide the module into the memory compartment until you hear a faint click. This is the retaining latches securing the module into the RAM compartment.

Replace the memory compartment cover and its retaining screw. Place the battery pack inside the battery compartment. Press down on the battery until it clicks into place.

Flip the laptop over and reconnect the AC power plug.
