How to Record From Skype to Make a Podcast

How to Record From Skype to Make a Podcast thumbnail
You should use a USB headset with a microphone to record your podcast instead of a headset.

Skype is a popular way to conduct podcast interviews or conversations that can't be recorded in person because the participants are not in the same location. You can call anyone with Skype, even those with traditional landline phones, by signing up for Skype Out, a relatively inexpensive add-on option to the free Skype membership. Use a USB headset instead of the kind that plugs into a headphone and microphone jack on your computer because USB hardware will produce a digital recording and thus better sound quality.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the position of your microphone so that it's up high, near the end of your nose. This will help reduce any breathing noise on the recording.

    • 2

Specify that you will be using Skype for your podcast. Right-click on the HotRecorder icon in your system tray. Choose "Skype" in the menu next to "Activate HotRecorder for."

    • 3

Close all other software except Skype and HotRecorder. If there are other computers that share your Internet connection, you will get better results if you record at a time when those computers are not using the Internet.

    • 4

Connect to the other participants in your podcast with Skype.

    • 5

Hit the "Record" button under the "Recorder" tab in the HotRecorder software. Proceed with your conversation.

    • 6

Click on the "Stop" button in HotRecorder when you are done. Enter a file name and save the audio file.

    • 7

Convert the file using the audio converter module of HotRecorder. Open the HotRecorder Audio Converter, a separate program from the recorder, and open the file you saved in step six. Choose "MP3" from the list of formats and click on the "Convert" button to convert your audio file to the MP3 format.
