How to Win at Mine Sweeper

"Minesweeper" is a classic Windows game combining luck, logical reasoning and quick thinking. To win the game, you must correctly clear a minefield by clicking on the squares that do not have any mines. To do this, you must carefully mark the squares with mines and attempt to deduce where the mines are. Clicking a single mine will end the game for you, so you need a steady hand and a focused mind if you want to win.

Instructions

    • 1

Select beginner level on the game. It is the easiest level to win. At the beginning of the game, you will see a small grid of square buttons.

    • 2

Click once on the minefield with the left mouse button. It should open up several empty squares as well as several squares with numbers. The numbers represent the number of adjacent mines. For example, if a square has the number 3 in it, it has 3 adjacent mines. Mines can only be in buttons you haven't clicked yet, not in empty or numbered squares.

    • 3

Mark all squares you know to be mines by moving the cursor over the square and clicking the right button. For example, if a square has a 3 and there are only three blue squares adjacent to it, all of them must be mines.

    • 4

Click on a square you know for sure is not a mine with the left button. This will open up more squares. For example, if you have three squares in a row labeled 2, 3 and 2 and you have already marked out three mines for the 3 square, both of those 2s are already touching 2 mines. Any other spaces adjacent to the 2s are empty. Click them to reveal more empty squares.

    • 5

Continue marking squares you know have mines and clicking squares you know don't until there are no more squares which you know to be mines for certain.

    • 6

Click on an empty square with the left button to guess. Guess either by clicking in the middle of a patch of button squares or clicking one that you know is unlikely to have a mine in it. For example, if a square with a 1 is surrounded by 4 squares, each only has a 1-in-4 chance of having a mine, making it a relatively safe bet.

    • 7

Continue to mark mines, click safe squares and guess as a last resort until you win the game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't get discouraged if you don't win. Every game requires both luck and skill. A single mistake or bit of bad luck can make even the best player lose.
