How to Disconnect a DSL Modem
Whether you're upgrading your DSL modem or you're discontinuing your service, you'll need to properly disconnect your DSL modem from the computer. Disconnecting a modem is basically installing it in reverse, so if you remember how you set it up you should be able to take it apart easily. If you're ending your service you'll also need to remove any DSL filters you have in the house.
Instructions
-
-
1
Power down the modem by unplugging the power cord from the power source.
-
2
Disconnect the power cord from the back of the modem.
-
-
3
Remove the Ethernet or USB network cable connecting it to the computer or router.
-
4
Unplug the phone line from the wall jack, then from the modem itself.
-
5
Go through the house and remove any DSL filters if you're discontinuing your DSL service. Unplug the filter from the wall jack, then remove the phone cord from the opposite end. You'll likely remember the process from when you installed them.
-
6
Pack up the modem, cables and filters in their original packaging, if available, and return it to your DSL provider, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
If you're simply upgrading your DSL modem you can leave the phone cord plugged into the wall jack and network cable can stay plugged into the computer. Connect them directly to the new modem.
Check with your DSL provider if you're ending your service to find out how they want the modem returned or if they recommend recycling it.
