An Ethernet cable is required to utilize a DSL connection.

Although laptops are designed to be wire-free, there are times when the laptop needs to connect to a wired device. This includes DSL Internet service from an Internet provider, such as Verizon. All laptops have a built in Ethernet connection port, allowing the wireless device to connect to the wired Internet signal. This is especially helpful when, for example, you are traveling and the hotel at which you are staying provides a wired Verizon DSL connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert an Ethernet cable into one of the "Out" ports on the back of the Verizon DSL modem.

    • 2

Plug the opposite end of the cable into the Ethernet connection port on the side of the laptop. Power on the laptop and the Verizon DSL modem if they are not already on. The Internet connection icon in the lower right corner will blink on, signaling the computer has detected the Internet connection.

    • 3

Double-click the Internet browser icon on the desktop. This launches the Internet on the wireless laptop, connecting it to the Web.

    • 4

Look on the bottom of the modem. There is an HTTP address listed there, followed by a series of numbers. Type the HTTP address into the URL bar of the Internet browser and press "Enter." This brings up the Verizon DSL modem activation page.

    • 5

Select the modem options you want to use on the Verizon device (such as any desired usernames and password, what cable connection it is using, and what computer system type is being connected to the modem). Click "Save" and the modem will become active. You are now able to navigate to your favorite Internet site.
