How to Network a DSL Modem to a Router
DSL modems can be used to create wireless networks by connecting them to wireless routers. To network a modem and a router, you'll need to purchase a wireless router from an electronics store or online retailer. Check the system requirements for the router you purchase to make sure your computers will be compatible with your new network. You should be able to use your existing modem network cable with the new router.

1
Reset the DSL modem by unplugging it from the power source. Turn off your computer as well.

2
Remove the Ethernet cable from the computer and attach it to your new wireless router. The modem and router should now be connected.

3
Temporarily attach a second Ethernet cable from any open port in the wireless router to the computer. This is only to configure the router and it can be removed after installation.

Plug in the DSL modem, plug in the wireless router and restart the computer. By the time the computer restarts, all three devices should be fully powered on.

5
Open a browser and navigate to the configuration IP address provided in the router's instruction manual. Follow the instructions provided to log in, change your password and establish security settings.

6
Take the temporary Ethernet cable out by removing it from both the computer and the router. Your wireless network is now established.
