How to Build a Simple and Easy Workbench
Any do it yourselfer needs a sturdy and organized space to complete home improvement projects. You can easily build a workbench in your garage or shed with a few tools and a little time and effort. You may already have most of the tools and wood needed for this project lying around the house or garage. If not, they can all be purchased at any home improvement store. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Level
- 13 by 19 inch metal support brackets (4)
- 5/15 by 3 inch lag bolts (24)
- Wood 2-by-4s, measuring 10 feet long (6)
- Circular saw
- Power drill
- 1/2 pound of 1-1/4-inch wood screws
- 1/2 pound of 10-penny nails
- Hammer
- Piece of 1/2-inch particleboard, measuring 4 by 10 feet
- Sandpaper
- Wood filler

Measure down from the ceiling to the desired height of your workbench using the measuring tape. Add 4 inches to this height and mark it on the wall with a pencil. Using the level, make sure the marks are even then continue to place marks every 32 inches on the studs in the wall.

Attach the metal brackets to the wall using the 5/16-inch lag bolts and power drill, using the marks as your guide.

Cut the 2-by-4 piece of wood into six pieces, each measuring 22-1/2 inches, using the circular saw. These serve as support pieces. Lay one support piece perpendicularly on top of each of the brackets, making sure that the top of each piece is flush against the wall. Attach them using the power drill and wood screws.

Cut three pieces of 2-by-4, each measuring 109 inches. Lay one of them flush against the wall on top of the other support pieces that were attached in Step 3. Lay one more in the middle and one on the front edge of the support pieces now attached to the brackets.

Attach all three pieces to the perpendicular supports with 10 penny nails and a hammer. Nail the two shorter pieces of wood that are left over to either end of the parallel supports.

Cut the rest of the 2-by-4 wood to a measurement of 110-1/2 inches. Attach this to the front of the support pieces using the nails and hammer.

Cut the particleboard into a panel measuring 110-1/2 inches. Cut this piece once more, making it into two separate 24-inch panels.

Lay the panels made in Step 7 on top of one another then nail both of them to all the support pieces. This will serve as the top of your workbench.

Sand all rough edges and fill all holes and uneven spaces with wood filler.

Tips & Warnings
Attach a panel of peg board and spikes to hang tools from on the wall behind the bench after assembly.
Always wear safety goggles and gloves while using power tools.
