Instructions

    • 1

Load the video editing software, such as Mpeg2Cut (which is free software), Nero Vision Xtra or Adobe Premiere. Unless you want to spend time ripping the DVD video to your hard drive and encoding it into a format your computer can work with, such as .AVI, you will need video editing software that is compatible with the .VOB file format used on DVDs.

    • 2

Insert the DVD containing the video you want to remove the commercial from into your DVD drive. Once the disc has spun up, open the first .VOB file in the "Video_TS" folder on the disc in your editing software. Most programs will recognize that the file is part of a set and run the .VOB files together in order. If this does not happen, you will need stick them together yourself.

    • 3

Scroll to the point in the video where the commercial begins and note the time. Find where that block of commercials ends and note that time also. Highlight the portion of the video from the start to end time of that commercial block. Delete that section of video; usually by clicking a "Delete" button, but consult your software's manual if you are unsure. Repeat with all other blocks of commercials.

    • 4

Export your video using the software's export function. If there is an option to export as .VOB files, use this as it cuts down on encoding time were you to decide to burn the video to another DVD. Alternatively, save the video as a .AVI, .MOV or any other video file format you can use on your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your video's .VOB files were run together by the software, check that each section of the video has been put into your new video in the correct order. This ensures that you do not spend time removing commercials, only to find you have to go back in and re-edit the video into the correct sequence.

  • If the commercial you want to remove is on a commercially pressed DVD, editing it out is technically a breach of copyright. Moreover, it may be a criminal offense under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to bypass any copyright protection on the disc in order to edit its contents. Only edit discs you hold the copyright for, or which are in the public domain.
